The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program (NITRD) has requested comments on its draft Smart Cities and Communities Federal Strategic Plan. The goals and strategies NITRD puts forth in this plan are worthwhile efforts to advance the development of smart cities in the United States. To strengthen these efforts, NITRD should also focus on cultivating a global smart city community, make it a strategic priority to reduce data poverty, and ensure that its work complements and aids the development of a national strategy for the Internet of Things.
