The only way for the United States and the UK to compete with China on AI is by working together with other allied nations. Today’s announcement of a collaborative R&D process between the two nations is an important step in building an AI ecosystem that protects shared democratic values.
The U.K. and the United States are correct that promoting common values—including diversity, inclusion, and civil liberties—is stronger when coordinated among allies. By committing to identify common, high-priority research opportunities in AI, the UK and the United States are showing that they recognize the importance of advancing their collective leadership. Engaging in a partnership to share resources, expertise, and best practices, proves that these nations can better infuse their common values into global norms for the ethical use of AI. This will help balance global power dynamics in AI and provide a welcome counterweight to China’s growing power.
