A group of international researchers have created a dataset that measures the carbon emissions associated with electricity consumption across 35 European countries in real-time. The dataset, called ECON-PowerCI, tracks how much carbon dioxide is emitted for every megawatt-hour of electricity consumed by combining daily data on power generation, demand, and electricity trade. It adjusts for electricity traded across borders, meaning imports and exports are counted in the country where the energy is actually used. Updated daily, ECON-PowerCI captures how economic and geopolitical events influence Europe’s power-sector emissions.
