Researchers from Stony Brook University in New York have created a dataset of DNA sequences and associated metadata from fish embryos and larvae collected near New York between 2021 and 2023. Early-stage fish are nearly impossible to tell apart by sight, and population models often lack data on these life stages. By compiling DNA-based identifications with information on where and when each specimen was found, the dataset reveals which species are spawning in local waters and provides baseline data for tracking environmental change and managing fisheries.
