Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science have built a national dataset of seasonal groundwater levels and rock water-release capacity from approximately 2,800 wells across India, covering the period 2000 to 2022. This dataset reveals where groundwater is being depleted fastest and where it’s holding steady, providing a valuable resource for researchers, planners, and policymakers working to manage India’s water future. It offers the clearest picture yet of long-term groundwater trends in the country, showing sharp declines in the north—especially in Punjab and Haryana—and more stable or rising levels in parts of the south.
