Recording Shifting Ice Cover in the Great Lakes

Researchers at the University of Michigan have created a dataset that helps scientists estimate how ice on the Great Lakes formed. The dataset compiles 120 years of air‑temperature records from long‑running weather stations across the region, providing the historical climate context needed to infer when and where lake ice likely developed. Scientists plan to use these records to improve predictions of future ice patterns and study how changing ice cover ’s impacts on winter ecosystems.
