Tracking Chicago’s Taxis

The City of Chicago has published a dataset of the taxi rides compiled by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) for the year of 2015, totalling 27 million rides, 83 million miles travelled, and $400 million spent. BACP collects this data from payment processors that cover most of Chicago’s taxi operators, and it includes information about the distance travelled, the start and end times, the fare, and the type of payment used for each trip. BACP rounded the start and end time of each trip to the nearest 15 minute mark and only provides the Census Tract instead of the specific pick-up and drop-off location of each trip to avoid revealing any potentially sensitive information.
