With cutting-edge companies such as DeepMind and world-class universities, the United Kingdom has become a world leader in AI. But some of its success has depended on its membership in the European Union. For example, the United Kingdom has benefitted tremendously from the free movement of AI talent in Europe. But Brexit has created uncertainty concerning the UK’s ability to attract foreign talent, the UK academic community’s access to the EU’s research funding, and UK startups’ access to venture capital. To avoid losing its standing as a world leader in AI post-Brexit, the UK will need to compensate for the benefits it will lose by leaving the EU.
