Facebook has released a dataset that measures how socially connected different regions are by measuring the probability that a pair of Facebook users in different geographic locations are friends with each other on the platform. Socially connected regions positively correlate with the spread of innovation, migration patterns, and trade flows, meaning data on social connectedness can support research on the role of social networks in economic activity. The anonymized dataset includes social connectedness scores for every U.S. county – U.S. county pair and every U.S. county – foreign country pair.
