The Trivedi Centre for Political Data at Ashoka University has released a dataset tracking every political party that has contested a national or state election since 1962. Many of the country’s political parties have changed their names or abbreviations since 1962. Researchers at the Trivedi Centre for Political Data have created an open-source system that assigns a unique ID to each party to better track their trajectory despite name changes. The dataset contains each party’s unique identifier, current name, most recent abbreviation, most common abbreviation, status, candidate demographics, and electoral history.
