Researchers from the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan have created the first high-resolution global dataset of public outdoor spaces, such as parks, plazas, sports fields, and roads, across 169 of the world’s largest cities. They used satellite images along with data from platforms like OpenStreetMap and Baidu Maps, which rely on contributions from volunteers and local sources. The dataset gives planners and researchers a clearer picture of how much open space cities have, supporting efforts to design greener, safer, and more inclusive urban environments.
