Visualizing South Korea’s Wildfire

Reuters has produced a map showing South Korea’s worst wildfire on record, showing how strong westward winds and mountainous terrain drove an unusually fast 70-kilometer spread to the east. Using satellite data, the map shows how the fire expanded each day: bright orange markers indicate active fire zones, while spreading clusters of grey show areas already burned or brought under control. The blaze ultimately burned over 48,000 hectares and destroyed cultural landmarks, including a 1,300-year-old temple.
