WASHINGTON— In response to Senator Schumer’s (D-NY) speech on the role of Congress in shaping the future of AI, Hodan Omaar, senior policy analyst at the Center for Data Innovation, issued the following statement:
There was one element missing from the framework Senator Schumer laid out today for AI: how Congress can create policies that spur the widespread adoption of this technology.
The Senator is right, AI does indeed offer enormous societal and economic benefits in sectors such as health care, transportation, and education. But realizing these benefits requires more than just public and private investments in the development of AI; the United States also needs a multipronged national AI adoption strategy to ensure these opportunities are translated into all the areas where they can make a positive difference in people’s lives.
It is therefore critical for Congress to help accelerate the public-sector adoption of AI by addressing challenges related to acquisition, funding, and oversight as well as industry adoption of AI by supporting sector-specific AI strategies. We look forward to working with policymakers on the steps they should take to support AI adoption.
