Tracking Street Trees in Los Angeles

by Martin Makaryan

Journalist Matt Stiles has used spatial data analysis and public records requests to compile a dataset containing 1.6 million urban street trees in more than 40 cities in Los Angeles County. The dataset contains each tree’s species, geographic coordinates, and measurements, such as height and trunk diameter. A visualization showing the tree distribution across Los Angeles County accompanies the dataset and highlights the greenest urban areas on the county map.
