The White House Issues Memo on Harnessing AI for U.S. National Security
President Joe Biden has issued a memorandum to govern the use of AI for national security purposes. The memo seeks to establish the United States as a leader in safe and secure AI. It directs multiple agencies to leverage their legal authorities to bring AI experts to the United States; formally designates the U.S. AI Safety Institute as the primary point of contact for private sector AI developers to test their models; and directs the U.S. intelligence community to prioritize collecting intelligence on the policies and progress of competitor countries in developing AI systems.
U.K. House of Lords Introduces Bill Expanding Data Access
The U.K. House of Lords, the legislature’s upper house, has introduced the Data Use and Access Bill to make it easier for several public sector organizations to access, share, and use data to improve public services. For example, the bill requires IT suppliers for the National Health Service (NHS) to meet common standards to ensure patients’ data is easily transferable across platforms and institutes digital identity verification and digitization for a number of government services, such as registering births or deaths.
