Improving Safety Monitoring in Mines

Researchers at Shanghai DianJi University have released the first public dataset of underground coal mine drilling operations to support the development of AI systems for safety monitoring. Compiled from surveillance footage, the dataset includes over 100,000 annotated images across key categories such as miners, drill pipes, rigs, and safety equipment. It’s designed to improve the accuracy of object detection models in dim, high-risk environments and to train AI systems that can, for example, detect when a worker enters a hazardous zone, trigger an alert if someone isn’t wearing a helmet, or automatically pause drilling equipment during unsafe interactions.
