Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany have created a dataset of 501 words to help test if language families in Lowland South America are related, both in terms of how words are used and how many similarities there are. The researchers hope the dataset will be useful for understanding the roots of understudied South American languages and serve as an example for using computer-assisted methods to study the history of languages in other parts of the world.
