EU Council Gives Final Green Light to AI Act

The Council of the European Union (EU) has approved the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, clearing the final hurdle for the legislation to take effect 20 days after publication in the EU’s official journal, although the regulations will start applying only in 2026. The AI Act creates a comprehensive set of rules for providers, deployers, importers, distributors, and product manufacturers of AI systems by grouping them into four categories according to their risk levels.

California State Senate Passes Bill to Regulate Frontier AI Models

The California State Senate approved Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) troubling bill, the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Systems Act, which mandates developers make certain safety determinations before training AI models and comply with various safety requirements, among other things. The State Assembly would also need to adopt the bill, and the Governor would need to sign it before it becomes law.
