A chart showing that moderate social distancing can stem the spread of cover-19.

The Washington Post has created a series of data visualizations that simulate how different measures, such as forced quarantining or social distancing, can affect the spread of a virus. The visualizations reveal that moderate social distancing usually leads to less spread of a virus than quarantining but that extensive social distancing is the best strategy. The visualizations also show that the number of cases of covid-19 in the United States spiked from 76 on March 1 to over 2,000 on March 13.
