The Washington Post collaborated with Google News Initiative and Agência Lupa in Brazil to create a simulation to help users better understand what the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the United States would look like if their neighborhood was the epicenter for the coronavirus pandemic. In a country as large as the United States, some may find it difficult to grasp the loss of over 200,000 lives, especially when they are far removed from heavily impacted areas. The simulation uses data on neighborhood blocks from the 2018 American Community Survey to draw a radius of COVID-19 deaths around a user’s address, beginning from the first outbreak in February to the present day.
