The Washington Post has created a series of visualizations that depict the population of unaccompanied minors who crossed the United States-Mexico border and are in the custody of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. One visualization shows that while the number of unaccompanied minors decreased from March 2019 to July 2020, it is now increasing with more than 8,500 minors in custody in February 2021. This may increase further to record levels as a result of the economic strain COVID-19 has had on Central America. Another visualization shows where the minors are coming from, with the most coming from Guatemala, followed by Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras.
