Data visualization showing firestorm clouds

The New York Times has created a series of visualizations showing the impact of the Dixie Fire in northern California in July. Extreme wildfires can generate conditions similar to thunderstorms such as large storm clouds, rain, and lightning. The visualizations show the location of the fires, the altitude and movement of firestorm clouds, and the number and types of resultant weather activity such as lightning strikes. According to one of the visualizations, the Dixie Fire produced a storm that generated 12 lightning strikes in an hour and rapidly accelerated the fire’s spread.
