The Wall Street Journal has created a series of visualizations showing how cuts in water allocations from the Colorado River will impact distribution in Arizona in 2023. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has reduced Arizona’s annual allocation of water from the Colorado River by 592,000 acre-feet for 2023, which is equal to around 300,000 Olympic pools. One visualization displays this number of Olympic pools above a map of the Phoenix metropolitan area, representing the area of Phoenix that would not receive water from the Colorado River if the rest of Arizona were to maintain the same levels of water consumption.
