A data visualization on missing students

The Associated Press and researchers at Stanford University have created a visualization tracking where the 700,000 students who left public schools in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic went. The visualization uses a figurine to represent every 1,000 students who left public schools between the 2019 and 2021 school years in the 21 states with available data. Blue figurines represent students who moved to private schools, orange figurines represent students who registered for homeschooling, purple figurines represent students who moved out of state, and gray figurines represent missing students who are not recorded as having moved or signed up for any kind of school. According to the visualization, of the over 700,000 students who left public schools during the pandemic, 230,000 students remain missing.
