NASA has created a new global map of the seafloor using data from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography satellite, an Earth-observing satellite that uses high-resolution radar to measure changes in sea-surface height. These measurements reveal variations in Earth’s gravity caused by underwater features, allowing scientists to map deep-sea mountains, ridges, and other terrain. The map uses purple to show areas with rapid elevation changes and green for more uniform regions, helping researchers better understand the seafloor.
