NASA has used its satellite-mapping project, Black Marble, to track changes in artificial nighttime lighting across Earth from 2014 to 2022. By merging data from three satellites and adjusting for atmospheric and environmental distortions, the visual reveals which regions have brightened or dimmed over time. It highlights rapid urban light growth in China and India in yellow, while Europe and the U.S. East Coast appears in purple, reflecting dimming linked to energy-saving efforts and widespread LED bulb adoption.
