The Washington Post has created a series of interactive visualizations tracking the types of energy used to generate electricity in the United States. One visualization displays the types of energy sources used to generate electricity in states with the lowest carbon intensity, a measure of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of electricity produced, from 2000 to 2020. According to the visualization, the six states with the lowest carbon intensity generate a significant percentage of electricity through nuclear power plants or hydroelectric dams.
