The New York Times has created a series of visualizations demonstrating how the COVID-19 pandemic affected Americans’ work commutes. One visualization shows the change in average driving speeds in 20 cities from autumn 2019 to autumn 2022. For example, the average speed of commutes at 7 AM in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles increased by over four miles per hour while commutes at the same time in Houston, Columbus, and Kansas City only increased by about two miles per hour.
