The Pudding’s interactive visualization reveals how love songs in popular culture have evolved over time, analyzing 5,100 Billboard Top 10 hits from 1958 to 2023. Traditional themes like serenades (purple bubbles) and heartache (blue bubbles) still feature prominently, but the landscape has broadened. The visualization also captures new subgenres like pursuit, it’s complicated, good riddance, sexual confidence, and self-love, demonstrating that, contrary to popular belief, songs about love have not dwindled. Instead, they have diversified, reflecting the evolving ways people experience and express love, connection, and romance in modern times.
