Visualizing Proportional Representation in the United States

The New York Times has created a visualization exploring how the U.S. Congress might look under a proportional representation system instead of the current winner-take-all system. Using a nationally representative survey on Americans’ political preferences, the analysis mapped voters across two indexes: an economic index (covering taxes, healthcare, and environmental policy) and a social index (addressing cultural, racial, and social issues like gun policy and immigration). Based on these indexes, the visualization defines hypothetical party platforms aligned with survey results and the ideological makeup of today’s Democratic and Republican parties. It then shows how 593 congressional seats would be distributed under proportional representation.

Take a look.
