The New York Times has created a series of visualizations to show the varied impact COVID-19 has had on U.S. correctional facilities across the country. One visualization compares the COVID-19 case rate in a state’s prison systems to the overall case rate in the state population. It reveals that for most states, the case rate in prison systems is much higher. For example, the case rate in Michigan’s correctional facilities is nine times higher than the state case rate. Another visualization shows that some states are not frequently testing inmates. For instance, despite Washington having an infection rate of more than 40 percent in its state prison systems, not all inmates have been tested yet.
