Changes in the number of payrolls issued by percentage.

The Wall Street Journal has created a series of graphs showing how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected employment in the United States. One graph shows that from April 2020 to April 2021, the number of payrolls issued in the leisure and hospitality industry increased by 31 percent, the largest increase in non-agricultural sectors that also include construction, retail, and manufacturing. Another graph shows the change in the U.S. unemployment rate, with unemployment hovering below 5 percent in early 2020, then increasing sharply in early 2020 to reach a peak of 15 percent in April 2020, followed by a steady decline to 6 percent as of April 2021.
