The Economist has created a series of visualizations showing the environmental impact of producing different foods indexed to the banana. The visualizations compare foods’ carbon emissions per weight, calorie counts, and protein contents according to how many bananas would generate the same amount of emissions for each metric. For example, according to the visualizations, producing one kilogram of ground beef generates as many carbon emissions as 109 kilograms of bananas while producing one calorie of ground beef generates as many carbon emissions as producing 54 calories of banana.
