NASA has released a visual from its NISAR satellite showing parts of Mexico City sinking at rates of up to 0.8 inches per month. The radar data reveals how decades of excessive groundwater pumping and urban development have caused the soft clay-rich ground beneath the city to compress unevenly. The visual uses blue shades to show areas experiencing the most severe sinking, including around the city’s main airport and the landmark Angel of Independence monument, highlighting growing infrastructure risks.
